“SPARSH 2020”: A national conference on “Dermatology in Ayurved”

Departments of Kayachikitsa and Panchkarma of Mahatma Gandhi Ayurved College Hospital and Research Centre (MGACH and RC), Wardha, Maharashtra, India, a constituent college of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences, Deemed to be University [DMIMS (DU)], had organized a 2-day national conference “SPARSH 2020” on January 23–24, 2020.
The objectives of the conference were as follows:
To discuss the integrated approach in the management of dermatological disorders.
To analyze the role of Dosha and Dushya in pathogenesis of dermatological disorders
To demonstrate Panchakarma procedures in different dermatological conditions.
To convey various aesthetic treatment plan for enhancing skin appearance.
Day 1, January 23, 2020 | |  |
The first plenary session of SPARSH 2020 was started with the key note address delivered by eminent guest speaker Dr. S.R. Narhari, Chief Dermatologist and Director Institute of Applied Dermatology, at Kasargod, Kerala, India. He emphasized integrative work on Shleepada (filariasis), a dreaded disease engulfing the human population. At the same time, he deliberated on a specific protocol development, essential for diagnosis and comparative study of filariasis in modern as well as Ayurveda perspective.
Inaugural session of the conference was preceded by Hon’ble Prochancellor of DMIMS (DU) and president of SPARSH 2020 Dr. Ved Prakash Mishra. Inaugurator of the conference was Hon’ble Dr. Vikram Chauhan, Director of “Planet Ayurveda,” Vice Chancellor of DMIMS (DU) Hon’ble Dr. Rajiv Borle, Registrar DMIMS (DU), Dr. A.J. Anjankar, Chief coordinator Dr. S.S. Patel, Dean allied science and OSD AVBRH, Dr. Abhyudayji Meghe, Dr. Shyam Bhutada, Dean of Mahatma Gandhi Ayurved College, and Dr. Priti Desai dean Academics, heads of the Department of Kayachikitsa and Panchakarma along with Dean’s of Medical, Dental college and Principal of Nursing college affiliated with university were the other dignitaries present for the inaugural session [Figure 1].
Introductory speech was delivered by respected dean and organizing chairman of SPARSH 2020, MGAC, Dr. Shyam Bhutada followed by inaugural address by Dr. Vikram Chauhan. This was preceded by e-souvenir launch of SPARSH 2020 by the hands of Hon’ble Prochancellor and president of the conference followed by release of e-books of Marma Shareera by Dr. Gourav Sawarkar and textbook Kushthant by Dr. Sourabh G. Deshmukh [Figure 2]. The scholarly gathering was graced by presidential address delivered by Hon’ble Dr. Vedprakash Mishra. He focused on the preventive aspect of Ayurveda regarding management of disease and emphasized on the spiritual health. The post-lunch session was initiated with the informative lecture delivered by guest speaker Dr. Uday Kulkarni, from Aarogyadham Centre, Mumbai. He emphasized on the significance of varies Panchakarma therapies beneficial to skin elements. This was followed third plenary session and informative lectured delivered by Dr. Shivanad Patil on role of Ayurveda in advance technique in trichology.

On the second day of the conference, the gathering was privileged to have the gracious presence of eminent speaker Dr. Gaurang Joshi, Director of Atharva Multi Specialty Clinic, Rajkot, Gujarat, who delivered the fourth plenary talk on Hetu, Samprapti, Lakshan, and Chikitsa of Eka-Kushta.
The fifth plenary session of SPARSH 2020 was continued by demonstration of fairness cream conducted by Dr. Nilima Dharkar, a leading cosmetic consultant, Pune. In post-lunch session, Dr. Anay Davare, Dermatologist at Mumbai and Secretary of Ayurved Prasarak Mandal demonstrated his para-surgical demonstration.
In this conference, there were total 164 paper presentations, of which 134 were oral and 30 were poster presentations.
The main output and considerations generated out of the conference were as follows:
- To fulfill the concept of Kushtha (various skin disorders) and its modern correlation with Ayurveda principles of treatment are needed to be incorporated.
- Scientific understanding of the efficacy of Ayurveda treatment protocols in various types of skin disorders (Kushtha) to be carried out through appropriate research studies.
- In various types of skin disorders (Kushtha) protocol to be followed in postgraduate institutes of Ayurveda throughout India and generate evidences.
- Government and National Health Agency support for necessary research funding and facilities to conduct these trials to be addressed.
